Winter Olympics

Attention all winter sports enthusiasts!  The upcoming 23rd Winter Olympic Games will be held from February 9 – 25, 2018.  The host country will be the Republic of Korea.  Korea has not hosted an Olympic Games since 1988 when Seoul was the host city for the Summer Olympics.  This year’s Olympics will feature 102 events in 15 sports.  New events this year are Snowboard Big Air, Speed Skating Mass Start, Curling Mixed Doubles, and Alpine Skiing Team Event.  The mascots of the games are a white tiger called Soohorang and an Asiatic black bear named Bandabi.

There will be two main venues for the events.  The Coastal Cluster events will be held in the city of Gangneung.  This location will be the site for the ice sports of speed skating, figure skating, ice hockey and curling.  The Mountain Cluster events will be held 30 minutes away in the city of PyeongChang.  This is where the opening and closing ceremonies and the Olympic Village are located.  The snow and sliding sports that will be held at the Mountain Cluster venue are alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, Nordic combined, ski jumping, snowboarding, bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton.

For more information on the Olympic Games, visit your local library branch.  You can also check out our on-line catalog at  We have fiction and non-fiction books about the Olympics for both children and adults.

Preschool story time at the Carroll Valley Library will continue through the winter on Tuesday mornings at 10:00am.  Join us for stories, songs, and crafts with Miss Crystal.  Bring your toddler and enjoy a morning at the library!

A new program we have recently started is our Baby story time on Wednesday mornings at 10:00am.  Babies and their parent or caregiver will sing songs, do fingerplays, read books, and have playtime.  It’s a great way to introduce your little one to the library!

Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve will be visiting our library branch on Thursday, January 18th at 6:30pm.  They will be presenting their Animal Ambassadors program.  No registration is required for this event.

Our library will also be holding a STEM program called Leap into Science on Monday, January 29th at 6:30 pm.  This program is recommended for children ages 3-7.  Children and their families will play with light by shining light through objects, bouncing it off of shiny surfaces, and blocking it to create shadows.  If you would like to register for this program, please contact the library at the number below.
